What is the Internet of Things people really want?

What is it about?

This is an unconference event based around people, technologies and concepts in a future Internet of Things, and what this could and should look like.

The purpose of the event is to share ideas and capture thoughts about ‘playful’ IoT futures to advance IoT thinking in new domains like media, entertainment, storytelling, games and toys.

We are inviting a wide range of people who are leaders and disruptors in this area, from makers, researchers, and academics to toy and game designers, artists and writers.

What do we mean by Internet of Things?

For us it means a world where active devices are able to control and sense their environment communicating locally and globally towards given tasks, which are useful to people.

In BBC R&D we’re asking, “What does a world look like where every object is connected to the
Internet, and thus can be detected and directed by other objects, computers and humans? What opportunities (and risks) arise, and how to do we get there?”

We're interested in what this this means for storytellers, artists, techies, the person doing the school run, teachers, musicians, designers, programme makers, audiences. What does this mean for news gathering, festivals, events, conservation, news dissemination, provenance, trust, security, and for crime ?

At this event we'd like to start teasing out the interesting questions and opportunities.

What is an unconference?

It’s a workshop-style event where everyone can actively take part in the discussion and anyone is welcome to run a session.

Sessions should be based on the theme of ‘Playful IoT futures’.
There are no rules to running a session, but the best ones are interactive ones.

If you are interested in a particular topic or have a question you would like to ask, you can start a discussion. You might like to show something you made or an idea you would like to share . Or perhaps run a learning session.

Look out for announcements about our wiki for session ideas and questions we are interested in asking.

The content of the sessions will be captured by scribes during the event and will be shared with the participants, and eventually will be more widely disseminated.
