Professional writing with impact
Sunday, April 13, 2014 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (BST)
London, United Kingdom
Give your professional communication the clear voice of authority. This intensive workshop offers a practical masterclass in concise, high-impact business and professional writing, enabling you to cut through jargon and make your case persuasively.
As a former UK ambassador to Sarajevo, Belgrade and Warsaw, tutor Charles Crawford has extensive experience in writing subtle, persuasive and highly operational reports for senior readers in Whitehall, NATO and the European Union. This is an exclusive opportunity to join Charles Crawford in a small group for an event that will transform how you set about professional writing. Advanced professional writing techniques are brought to life through practical exercises supported by real-life examples of diplomatic and commercial communications, including original FCO telegrams released through Freedom of Information applications. It's the ultimate guide to writing with impact.
Concentrating on the psychology and technique of powerful professional writing, this highly practical one-day course gives you the opportunity to develop and test new writing skills. Topics covered include:
- How to make your writing a conversation with the reader
- Layout and structure – what draws a reader in, what turns a reader off
- Tone - how to tune your writing to your readers
- Skilful use of grammar and punctuation
- Clarity - keeping facts, analysis and recommendations separate
- Making work readable - rooting out clichés, jargon and weak vocabulary
- Less is more – the art of tough-love editing
This course is for you if…
You want to improve your skills in any form of internal or external business and professional writing, including press releases, reports and presentations. The course features professional writing in English, but the techniques and insights for effective written work apply to many other languages.
Charles Crawford served with the FCO for 28 years, including as UK Ambassador in Sarajevo, Belgrade and Warsaw and during that time wrote many millions of words. He has immense experience in senior diplomacy, including negotiating with the Russians during a major bilateral spy scandal, engaging with Balkan war crimes indictees and agreeing the huge EU Budget. His written work such as his reporting from Belgrade during the crisis following the assassination in 2003 of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjić was praised at the highest levels in London and the EU/NATO
He is now a professional writer and mediator who has given communication and negotiation skills masterclasses to the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organisation, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and many other international bodies and foreign governments.
