Event Details

How do we prepare young people for their future – not our past?
What will our best science and maths teachers be like in 2030, and where will they come from?

Come and join The Royal Society, the national academy of science at a workshop at Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum to help us create a vision for what the UK’s science and mathematics education system should look like in 15-20 years time.

We hope you will enjoy a space where radical and free-thinking is encouraged and where no idea is too bold to debate for our vision for 2030 and beyond. This workshop is one of a number of consultation events being held across the UK from May to July. It will bring together views from the education community to shape the Royal Society Vision Committee’s Vision for the future of science and mathematics education . Your input will directly feed into the evidence for the Committee’s UK policy report to be launched in the spring of 2014.

Come, hear and debate the views of the Royal Society’s Vision Committee on topics such as:

·the teaching profession

·school-to-work transition

·school leadership

· technology in the learning environment

· future knowledge and skills

·accountability for the future

All participants will take away a pack with teaching resources and details of the Royal Society’s Associate Schools Network.

Registration will open at 4 pm, for a 4:30 pm start, and end with a buffet supper from 7 pm. The event is free to attend.

More Information

The world in 2030 will be very different from that of today. Major changes are likely to take place over the next decades in terms demography, the environment and new technologies. Individuals with the right skills and knowledge will be better equipped to adapt to this uncertain future. How can we make sure young people are well prepared for these opportunities and challenges?

The Royal Society has launched an ambitious project to set out a vision for how the UK can develop an inspiring and high performing science and mathematics education system over the next 15—20 years. The Committee is reviewing how the UK can create a system which provides all young people with inspirational and relevant science and mathematics education by 2030. It is asking questions about our educational institutions, teaching workforce, curriculum and assessment and accountability mechanisms.

The work is led by the Vision Committee which includes scientists, education experts, teachers and former politicians. They have developed their ideas and are now consulting widely on what others think of their vision and how it can be developed. Help us imagine what the UK’s science and mathematics education system should look like in 15-20 years, and how this can be achieved. Register now for this important event in designing education for generations to come.

If you wish to talk to anyone about the Vision project more generally, please email vision@royalsociety.org.uk and someone will come back to you as soon as possible.
