Scafell Pike Day Hike - Three Peaks Challenge Training Event
Sunday 19th may 2013 - meet at 10am
Meet at The Green (nr The Wasdale Head Inn), Wasdale Head, CA20 1EX
This event is intended for organisers or participants who will be attempting a National Three Peaks Challenge of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon - often within a 24 hour period, in 2013. Note that some charity challenges use Seathwaite for Scafell Pike, not Wasdale Head. Scafell Pike can be considered the most challenging in terms of navigation, especially in poor weather conditions, or in darkness, and groups can easily become disorientated here. Walking this mountain beforehand can be an invaluable advantage in terms of safety and time during your challenge.
Merseyventure have been involved with organising Three Peaks Challenges for over 10 years, and our team of mountain guides and support staff are all friendly and approachable, and have all got a wealth of experience to share with you. We like to encourage a fun, friendly and social atmosphere on our events, not simply an instructional day out.
Meet at 'The Green', car park at Wasdale Head, at 10am on Sunday. Here you will meet the other walkers, and your mountain guides. Walkers will be split down into smaller groups of around 6-8 per mountain guide, have a quick kit check, weather and safety brief, and should start walking within about 30 minutes.
Groups will set off for the Scafell Pike summit, via the Lingmel Col route. The pace will be relaxed, with plenty of time to stop and discuss key navigational features, as well as various aspects of both this local area, and the Three Peaks Challenge in general.
Groups should arrive on the summit at around 1pm, where they should have a good view of the surrounding peaks. After a bite to eat and a coffee, groups will descend back to Wasdale Head, hopefully arriving by around 4pm - plenty of time for a pint and a chat in the Wasdale Head Inn.
You will require basic walking equipment and clothing, food and drinks. Full details will be emailed to you before the event, but you should have walking boots, waterproof jacket and trousers, fleece jacket, breathable base layer, hat and gloves, small rucksack, head torch and spare batteries, personal first aid kit, plus dry clothing back in your car. Participants MUST have a minimum level of suitable clothing and equipment which will be checked before starting the walk.
It is possible that we may not be able to reach the summit safely due to weather conditions on the day. In such cases, we will attempt a walk of equal time and length, but lower down in the valley using the same start and end point at Wasdale Head. In the circumstance that we cannot run the event at all due to severe weather (ie heavy snow or flooding) we will offer the option of a full refund or alternative date.
Wasdale Head is probably more remote tham you think. Please allow at least 2 hours to get to Wasdale Head from both M6(Junction 42) North Lakes or M6(Junction 36) South Lakes. For both of these routes, stay on the A595 for easiest progress, until reaching Gosforth or Holmrook. The more direct route via Little Langdale involves crossing the Wrynose and Hardknott passes and is not recommended.
No better way to enjoy the weekend than by arriving the night before and enjoying a few pints then bed, rather than a long drive to Wasdale early in the morning. This area has two campsites, a couple of B&B's, self-catering cottage, and the hotel and rooms at the Inn, all within walking distance of the start/finish. Visit the Wasdale Web for full details.
The mobile phone signal at Wasdale Head is very weak or not at all, so you cannot contact ourselves or other friends on the day once in this area. There is a payphone at the Wasdale Head Inn, and mobile phone signals return after about 10 minutes climbing. You WILL NOT be able to inform us if you are going to arrive late - hence leaving enough time to get to Wasdale Head - see above...!
If you wish to have your own private guide for the above event, we can organise one of our guides to stay with you or your group of up to 6 walkers for £160. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to book.
