Event Details

This is a unique chance to meet, listen to and interact with two experts at the forefront of the photography self publishing photo-book phenomenon. Brunoc Ceschel founded Self Publish, Be Happy in 2010 with the aim of helping artists and photographers make and publish their own books and celebrating the form. Cristina du Middel is a photographer who self-published her first book, The Afronauts, in 2012. Through word-of-mouth, it has become a huge success, selling out its print run, making it onto most of the Best of 2012 photobook lists and and being shortlsted for the prestigious Detshe Borse Prize 2012.

The one-day course, curated by Sean O'Hagan, will consist of two morning talks followed by an afternoon of interaction and a Q&A session.

To get the most out of the day, you will be somebody who has a series of work that you want to publish as a book. You may be a photographer or student who just want to get your work seen, or an artist who works with photographs who want to make an artistic book - like the Afronauts. You should have enough unified images to provide the material for a book in some form.

The course will provide practical advice on editing and arranging images, and on how to actually get the book seen by others. You will leave with a cleared knowledge of how to present your work in book form and a sense of the possibilities of self-publishing .

TUTOR PROFILES

Bruno Ceschel is a writer, curator and lecturer in Photography at the University of the Arts London. He is the founder of Self Publish, Be Happy (SPBH), an organisation that collects, promotes and studies contemporary self-published photobooks. SPBH collection contains more than 1,000 publications and with an extensive series of workshops, talks and projects the organization has become a platform for a worldwide community of contemporary photographers. SPBH has organised events at a number of institutions in London (The Photographer’s Gallery, ICA, Whitechapel Gallery) and abroad (C/O Berlin, Printed Matter in NYC, MiCamera in Milan) and most recently published books by photographers Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, and collector Brad Feuerhelm for the series SPBH Book Club. Previously Ceschel worked on the 2008 edition of the Brighton Photo Biennial, as book editor at Chris Boot Ltd, and was associate and creative editor at Colors magazine. Ceschel regularly writes for FOAM, the British Journal of Photography, Aperture Photobook Review and HotShoe.

Cristina De Middel ( Spain, 1975) is a photojournalist based in London that has been working for different newspapers in Spain and with NGO´s such as Doctors Without Borders or the Spanish Red Cross for more than 8 years. She combines her strictly documentary assignments , which has been exhibited and awarded in several occasions (incuding Sony World Photography Awards and PhotoFolio Arles 2012 nad the Deutsche Börse), with more personal projects . This B-side of Cristina´s work deliberately asks the audience to question the language and the veracity of photography as a document and plays with reconstructions or archetypes that blur the border between reality and fiction.

Sean O'Hagan writes about photography for the Guardian and the Observer and is also a general feature writer. He was named interviewer of the year in the British press awards in 2003 for his profiles of footballer Roy Keane and musician Brian Wilson, among others. He is the winner of the 2011 J Dudley Johnston award from the Royal Photographic Society "for major achievement in the field of photographic criticism" for his writing in the Observer and the Guardian.
