Self-publishing can be complicated and confusing, and it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the quantity of contradictory information and advice. This course gives you a clear roadmap to follow, so that you can turn your manuscript into a professional-quality paperback and ebook.
This two-day workshop is aimed at people who want to do as much of the work as possible themselves – from setting up an imprint, buying ISBNs and choosing a printing company, to laying out the pages and designing the cover. We look at each step of the process in turn, so that by the end you’ll know exactly what to do and in which order – and you’ll be aware of the pitfalls and difficulties that you’ll face.
The workshop will be practical and creative, balancing teaching with hands-on practice. We don’t assume any particular technical knowledge, but every self-publisher needs to be comfortable working with computers.
At the end of the course, you’ll receive a summary booklet (self-published, of course).
Christopher Shevlin is the author (and designer, type-setter and publisher) of The Perpetual Astonishment of Jonathon Fairfax, a successful self published novel that has been reviewed in Stylist magazine (4 stars) and Metro (3 stars). He is also an experienced trainer who teaches writing skills to executives and professional communicators, as well as advising companies on writing and communication. His book on this subject, Writing For Business, was published by Penguin, giving him experience of traditional as well as independent publishing.
Praise for The Perpetual Astonishment of Jonathon Fairfax:
“A very English Carl Hiaasen – filled with throwaway detail, joyously funny dialogue and slightly absurd characters. … Utterly recommended.” Stylist, 1 August 2012
“Shevlin was rightly picked up by the literary agency that represents the likes of David Nicholls… by turns absurd and engaging.” Metro, 15 August 2012
