Anthony Kraus writes: It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to our 2016-17 concert season, the orchestra's 44th.

Each programme this year features a major symphonic work by some of the greatest exponents of the genre: Mahler, Beethoven, Brahms and Dvořák provide these focal points, and are presented alongside a varied selection of music from Russia, the United States, and Great Britain.

The season opens in November with a family affair - Music Director David Greed directs J S Bach's Double Violin Concerto, with David's two violinist sons Tom and Jack as soloists. This is paired with Mahler's tragic 6th Symphony, considered by many to be his greatest for its equilibrium between form and drama.

January sees us exploring the great Russian storytellers: Glinka and Borodin give us extrovert depictions of folk story and landscape, while the life of a fictitious Russian army officer is vividly brought to life in Prokofiev's entertaining suite.

April's programme allows the orchestra to tackle two of the greatest "warhorses" of the repertoire: Brahms's Symphony No. 1 and Tchaikovsky's Fantasy Overture: Romeo and Juliet. Much more intimate in scale is Benjamin Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, and I am delighted to be able to welcome Yorkshire-born tenor Nicholas Watts and Andrew Littlemore (French horn) to perform this wonderfully evocative song-cycle.

The season closes in a riot of American classics - Gershwin's American in Paris and Copland's Rodeo really give the orchestra a chance to let their hair down!

Being able to present these sorts of large-scale programmes is only possible with the financial support of our donors and patrons, and we are enormously grateful for the continued generous support of Liz and Olaf Arnold, and the Liz and Terry Brammall Foundation.

For the first time we present every concert of the season at St Edmund's Church, Roundhay, and I do hope that you will be able to join us there to enjoy another exciting journey with the Sinfonia of Leeds.
