Event Details

BALTIC presents and evening of discussion with a panel of architects and historians foregrounding the bold and ambitious examples of modernism that developed here in the north east in the postwar period, and their legacy within present and utopian aspirations. The panel, including acclaimed writer Rutter Carroll; Peter Buchan, Senior Partner at Ryder Architecture; Graham Farmer, Director of Architecture at Newcastle University; and Elain Harwood from English Heritage, will explore the legacy of modernism in architecture, design and art in the region in the period from the 1950s to the 1970s, with particular reference to the work of Berthold Lubetkin, Victor Pasmore and Ryder and Yates.

The seminar expands on the concerns explored by the Croatian artist David Maljkovic in his exhibition, Sources in the Air, at BALTIC from 15 March until 30 June, and will be chaired by BALTIC curator Alessandro Vincentelli.

Presented in association with Ryder Architecture and as part of Festival of the North East and Love Architecture.
