Event Details

With the European Parliament set to vote on whether to extend the term of copyright in sound recordings, this event looks at the ramifications of this Commission proposal. Speakers will address the implications for copyright creators and users, for innovators and consumers and what it means for those aiming for a modern workable intellectual property policy.

Speakers include representatives from national archives, a session musician with experience of representing collecting societies, a broadcaster and from the Open Rights Group.  A roundtable of MEPs will subsequently participate in a panel discussion with moderated question and answers to allow a structured debate.

Programme:

Chair: Eva Lichtenberger MEP, Green Member of the Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament.

Speakers :

  • Becky Hogge: Director Open Rights Group
  • Pekka Gronow: Sound Archivist Finnish Broadcasting Archives and Adjunct Professor of Ethnomusicology, University of Helsinki
  • Ruijsenaars Heijo,  Legal Adviser to the European Broadcasters Union (EBU)
  • Mike Collins, Session Musician (former representative of the Music Producers Guild)
  • Martin Kretschmer, Professor of Information Jurisprudence, Director: Centre for Intellectual Property Policy & Management, Bournemouth University

A roundtable of MEPs will follow, including Christopher Fjellner (EPP), Marco Cappato tbc (ALDE),  Helga Trüpel (Greens) and David Hammerstein (Greens).

This conference is co-organised by the Greens/Efa in the European Parliament and the Open Rights Group.

Please note, during registration, you will be asked to provide your home address and date of birth. This is so we can ensure your smooth entry to the European Parliament on the day

Open Rights Group

The digital age is transforming society: bringing us greater democracy, transparency and new creative possibilities. When these freedoms are under attack, the Open Rights Group is there to defend them. Founded in 2005 by 1,000 digital activists, ORG has become the UK’s leading voice defending freedom of expression, privacy, innovation, consumer rights and creativity on the net.

Getting into the political trenches in the UK and EU, we mobilise our supporters to stop bad laws. Working closely with other campaign groups, we lobby government and talk to the media whenever our rights are threatened.

ORG is a non-profit company funded by donors, mostly by people like you. We depend on regular contributions to run and win our campaigns.
