Ever fancied blowing up a castle?! Or organising a car chase? If so then locations may be the department you should be working in. Often unjustly overlooked, it is without doubt one of the most varied, challenging and fun departments on any production.
Led by distinguished location manager Harriet Lawrence (SUFFRAGETTE, DOWNTON ABBEY), this small-group class – open to a maximum of 12 attendees – is designed to give runners and other early-career industry professionals the inside information needed to make an informed decision about how locations works and whether this is where you should be taking your career.
During the day Harriet will draw on her extensive experience and knowledge to give attendees detailed expert insights into all aspects of the role, including:
- Scouting locations
- Script breakdown
- Photographing locations
- The tech recce
- Scheduling and planning
- Key contract terms
- The Unit Base, MO, and managing the shoot
Please note that this class is for North East early career industry professionals. To take part in this class you must meet the following eligibility criteria:
1. You must have a minimum of 1 paid credit gained in a film, TV or a commercials production environment, working as a trainee or above, and for a duration of at least 1 week.
2. You must be based in the North East of England (County Durham, Northumberland, Teesside or Tyne and Wear).

Harriet Lawrence is one of the UK’s leading location managers, with over twenty years of experience on a wide range of film, television and commercial productions. Her distinguished list of credits includes SUFFRAGETTE, Stephen Poliakoff’s DANCING ON THE EDGE, DOWNTON ABBEY and OUTNUMBERED. In addition to being a practitioner, she also has an extensive background as a trainer; since 2006, she has project managed the Production Guild’s highly regarded Assistant Location Managers Training Scheme, preparing the next generation of location managers.
