a dramatic exploration of Edward Carpenter's social and sexual politics

The piece captures an unconventional Victorian – the gay socialist, Edward Carpenter: his passions, his politics and how the two combined within the Commonwealth Cafe. Based on new research by Dr Helen Smith of University of Sheffield. The piece is supported by the PlastiCities research group and Furnace Park, a creatvie space for the community located in Shalesmoor.
Please come along to the accompanying exhibition based at the University of Sheffield in the foyer of the Jessop West Building from 20th -25th May 2013. The exhibition will explore the background to the theatre piece, and present new archival evidence which explores the legacy of Edward Carpenter and political activism in Sheffield as well as new oral histories of modern day activists from the University of Sheffield Stories of Activism project.
