London is here because the Romans found this was the first place it was easy to cross the Thames coming up from the sea. And for centuries London Bridge was the only crossing for tens of miles. This walk explores the bridges which lead to and from the City of London from Blackfriars to Tower Bridge (although technically the latter is just outside the City). This tells the story of how these bridges came to be built and paid for and explains why London Bridge was moved in the 19th century. We will go up the steps where Charles Dickens set the murder of Nancy in his novel Oliver Twist and hear about a real life murder on Blackfriars Bridge.
This event is part of Totally Thames that runs from 1-30 September 2016.
