Be part of Hampshire’s Big Theme – a special event for Hampshire arts, cultural, archive, heritage and education organisations.

What is the Hampshire Big Theme?

The annual Hampshire Big Theme is an exciting collaborative programme of exhibitions, performances, installations, events and digital experiences led by Hampshire Cultural Trust.

Each one explores a topic inspired by a key anniversary or popular theme with a unique Hampshire twist!

We have already held three exciting Big Themes: 2014: 1914;  2015: Dinosaurs! and 2016: Royal Blood. We are working on an exciting range of future Big Themes, and this event will focus on 2017: Jane Austen and 2018: Creative Genius.

2017: Jane Austen: Austen was born at Steventon Rectory in north Hampshire and spent most of her life in the county before she died in Winchester. This Big Theme will explore Hampshire’s preeminent creative genius marking the bi-centenary of her death.

2018: Creative Genius: Let's celebrate Hampshire's amazing contribution to artistic creativity, science, technology and industrial innovation. Through exhibitions, events and happenings. this Big Theme will explore the extraordinary artists, inventors and entrepreneurs who have started their work in Hampshire and made their impact on the nation and the wider world.

What is the purpose of this event?

The Hampshire Big Theme creates fantastic opportunities for arts, cultural, archive, heritage and education organisations to promote their work, take part in exciting joint projects and benefit from additional marketing capacity.

This special networking event is a great opportunity for you to:

  • Find out more about the Hampshire Big Theme initiative and future topics;
  • Learn about the benefits for your organisation in taking part and how you can get involved;
  • See examples of cultural projects that have taken place as part of the 2016 Big Theme: Royal Blood and hear about how organisations have gained by taking part;
  • Help shape the narrative and ideas to explore at each Big Theme;
  • Network with others who are working in a range of cultural practices, from artists to zoos, via dance companies, libraries, museums, theatres and more.

If you have been to one of our previous Big Theme events, this will be an opportunity to catch up on progress and plan your future involvement.

Who should attend?

This networking event is for all Hampshire Solent based arts, museums, archives, heritage organisations and universities that are interested in the Big Theme initiative and would like to find out more about how they can take part. Organisations in neighbouring localities - for example Portsmouth, Southampton, Isle of Wight, Dorset, Berkshire, Surrey, Sussex - that have links with the Big Theme and would like to get involved are very welcome.

To ensure that a wide variety of organisations have the opportunity to take part, we are limiting the number of places to 2 per organisation. So please check the attendee list below for colleagues from your organisation before booking.
