What are the classes going to be like?
Each evening class is 3 hours long and includes physical and verbal warm-ups, games, exercises, relevant theory and de-briefing. Through playfulness, fun and laughter, we explore the world of improvisation (mostly off-stage), to learn new approaches to life and work, handle mistakes and develop our resilience.
The classes are participative and experiential. Throughout the classes, you will be working in pairs and groups of various sizes. We'll take a break in each evening session - in which refreshments are available. The intensive weekend sessions cover the same curriculum over the same total time, running from 10am-5pm, with breaks and lunch.
Who will be teaching the classes?
The classes will be taught by one or more of our faculty. The current faculty is improvisation author and director Paul Z Jackson, and Comedy Store Players Lee Simpson and Neil Mullarkey.
All tutors have many years of experience of teaching improvisation. Our teaching is based on the work of improvisation legends such as Viola Spolin, Keith Johnstone and Del Close. We also draw on more recent developments such as the work of The Applied Improvisation Network.
This set of courses will be taught by Paul Z Jackson.
Do I need to be funny to take these classes?
No. You may be surprised to hear that in order to improvise, you do not need to be able to tell jokes or be particularly snappy. What you do need is a collaborative attitude and a willingness to try something new (in a safe environment).
Do I need previous experience in improvisation?
Nope. No previous experience needed either on a stage or in any form of comedy.
Is this course only for beginners?
This course is for beginners with no previous experience of improvisation as well as experienced improvisers who want to get a new perspective on the use of improvisation techniques in different areas of life. We welcome students from all levels to learn and laugh together.
Whether you are a student, teacher, manager, construction worker, nurse, theatre lover (or not), you will all improvise together and progress individually and collectively.
Can I bring my kids?
As with the Comedy Store, the age requirement is 18+
Do you provide overnight accommodation?

I can no longer come. Can I get a refund?
