The Comedy Store Players present The Improvisation Academy

The Comedy Store Players

Improvisation Academy Foundation Courses

8 sessions over 8 weekday evenings or 2 weekends, to improvise life one step at a time.

* Do you want to learn the skills that The Comedy Store Players use to make up their shows?

* Would you like to be more spontaneous on the stage of life?

* Would you enjoy meeting like-minded people to develop your confidence and creativity in a sociable environment?

If so, we will teach you the basic skills and principles of improvisation. In fact, the course is split into two parts, Improvisation for Life and Improvisation at Work, to make sure you get the skills you want:

Improvisation for Life

Evening Option: Tuesdays  4, 11, 18, 25 February   Time: 7pm-10pm

Weekend Options:

Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 March    Time: 10am-5pm

Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 May       Time: 10am-5pm

Venue: The Poor School

In these four sessions you’ll experience activities that build your confidence.  You'll meet the main principles of improvisation in an atmosphere of safety.  These classes will bring you out of your shell, so that you can enjoy the more outgoing aspects of your personality.

If you tend to stay silent and sometimes go unnoticed, you'll learn how to articulate your ideas so that they will be heard and so that you can make an impact in groups and social settings.

You will learn to bring your hidden resources into the open and put them to good use. You’ll sample many of the ways that improvisation can quickly develop your skills, so you can start to apply the ideas in your life and work straight away.

Personal development:

  • Feeling more confident on the stage of life

  • Being in the moment and accessing your creativity

  • Collaboration and better relationships through co-creation

  • Facing challenges such as difficult conversations

Improvisation at Work

Evening Option: Tuesdays  4, 11, 18, 25  March        Time: 7pm-10pm

Weekend Options:

Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 March      Time: 10am-5pm

Saturday 7 June and Sunday 8 June   Time: 10am-5pm

Venue: The Poor School

These four sessions will help you make a leap in your presence and personal impact.  You will learn tools and techniques that release your creativity and make you truly innovative. The course will raise your communication skills from adequate to truly outstanding, and take your presentations from competent to compelling.

If currently not everyone quite gets you, you'll be making the most of your real merits by the end of this course.  You can go from being the second banana to taking charge, by discovering how to navigate successfully through uncertainty.  Think on your feet and handle challenging situations with confidence and creativity.

In other words, these sessions are about harnessing your creativity, raising your game to a higher level and increasing your personal and professional impact.

Professional development:

  • Resilience and 'bounceback-ability'

  • Presenting yourself and interacting with an audience

  • Leading and following in teams

  • Solving problems and dealing with conflict

What are the classes going to be like?

Each evening class is 3 hours long and includes physical and verbal warm-ups, games, exercises, relevant theory and de-briefing. Through playfulness, fun and laughter, we explore the world of improvisation (mostly off-stage), to learn new approaches to life and work, handle mistakes and develop our resilience.

The classes are participative and experiential. Throughout the classes, you will be working in pairs and groups of various sizes. We'll take a break in each evening session - in which refreshments are available. The intensive weekend sessions cover the same curriculum over the same total time, running from 10am-5pm, with breaks and lunch.

Who will be teaching the classes?

The classes will be taught by one or more of our faculty. The current faculty is improvisation author and director Paul Z Jackson, and Comedy Store Players Lee Simpson and Neil Mullarkey.

Paul Z Jackson   Lee Simpson   Neil Mullarkey

All tutors have many years of experience of teaching improvisation. Our teaching is based on the work of improvisation legends such as Viola Spolin, Keith Johnstone and Del Close. We also draw on more recent developments such as the work of The Applied Improvisation Network.

This set of courses will be taught by Paul Z Jackson.

Do I need to be funny to take these classes?

No. You may be surprised to hear that in order to improvise, you do not need to be able to tell jokes or be particularly snappy. What you do need is a collaborative attitude and a willingness to try something new (in a safe environment).

Do I need previous experience in improvisation?

Nope. No previous experience needed either on a stage or in any form of comedy.

Is this course only for beginners?

This course is for beginners with no previous experience of improvisation as well as experienced improvisers who want to get a new perspective on the use of improvisation techniques in different areas of life. We welcome students from all levels to learn and laugh together.

Whether you are a student, teacher, manager, construction worker, nurse, theatre lover (or not), you will all improvise together and progress individually and collectively.

Can I bring my kids?

As with the Comedy Store, the age requirement is 18+

Do you provide overnight accommodation?

No, but London does have many lovely places to stay.

I can no longer come. Can I get a refund?

We will refund you in full (minus registration costs) if you cancel your booking at least 21 calendar days in advance.

What if I don’t like it?

If you turn up and discover this is not for you, you can leave up to 90 minutes into your first class and we’ll give you your money back (again minus registration costs).

I want to come but can't do these dates.
