Event Details

One of Rugby's legends, ex England and British Lions player Fran Cotton will speak at the first ever Manchester Rugby Business Network. The event will be a free business networking evening for business people with a passion for rugby who aim to help each other in life and in business.

Fran's muddy face has been immortalised in the picture above and he was also the manager of the Lions in 1997 alongside coaches Ian McGeeechan and Jim Telfer. Fran and Steve Smith's company Cotton Traders is a fantastic success story and Fran will share his experiences both on and off the field with the Rugby Business Network Members.

What Wikipedia Says:

Francis Edward Cotton (born 3 January 1947) is a former rugby union prop forward who played for England and the British Lions. His clubs includedCoventry R.F.C. and Sale. After retiring, he remained in rugby administration and founded a clothing company. In July 2007, Cotton returned to his former club Sale as a member of the club's board.[2]

Cotton was born in WiganLancashire and went to Loughborough University to study physical education. Cotton was ahead of his time in terms of physical preparation. It was during these years that Cotton would win the Glengarth Sevens at Davenport Rugby Club (Stockport Rugby Club) along with Steve Smith and Clive Rees. Cotton made his England debut against Scotland in 1971, and played for them 31 times. He also captained the English team three times.

He represented the Lions on their tours to South Africa in 1974New Zealand in 1977 and South Africa in 1980. It was during the game against the Junior All Blacks on the 1977 tour that the famous 'Mudman' image of Cotton, waiting for the ball at a lineout while caked head-to-toe in mud, was taken. Captured by Colorsport's Colin Elsey, it become one of the most iconic images of rugby union, and in 2009 was named the 5th best sporting photo by the Daily Mail's sports writers.[3] He returned home early from the 1980 tour after leaving the field with chest pains in a tour match.

With Steve Smith he founded the clothing company Cotton Traders in 1987.

Cotton Traders has 1200 staff and predicts revenue of in excess of £84m this year.

The event will be held at the St James Cub which is one of Manchesters oldest private members clubs.

Your host for the event will be Mike Newlin who is one of the most successful organisers of sporting events and sportsmans lunches ever. Mike sold his company to Nigel Wray of Saracens and retired and is now helping the Rugby Business Network, he is also organising the 1974 British Lions 40 year reunion lunch next year in May 2014.

Please invite your friends in business and rugby along to what should be a fantastic and free networking event with two cracking speakers at a beautiful venue.
