Description

The aim of this one day conference will be to get the important - and awkward - issues debated publicly, with a view to stimulating wider public discussion about how we should move forward.

What does the future hold for newspapers in Scotland? How can they best respond to the challenges of the digital age?

Will the new system of press regulation work?

Is the structure of broadcasting north of the border fit for purpose?

What lessons can be learned from experience elsewhere in the world?

Structure and Speakers

There will be four sessions with speakers restricted to 30 minutes, so that there will be ample time for questions and discussion. The four sessions will be:

The prospects of the Scottish press – Tom Thomson, Managing Editor, the Herald & Times Group.

Regulation post-Leveson – panel with Charles McGhee, IPSO and formerly editor of The Herald, and NUJ representative.

Financing the media: lessons from abroad - Professor Michael Bromley, City University, London.

Broadcasting post-referendum - Professor Neil Blain, Stirling University.

The conference is open to media practitioners, policy makers, politicians, academics and interested members of the public.

There will be no fee for attendance and tea and coffee will be provided, but participants will buy their own lunch either in the university or at one of the many nearby cafés and restaurants.
