What is Missing Maps?

The Missing Maps project is an open collaboration of NGOs that aims to map the most vulnerable places in the developing world, in order that international and local organisations, and individuals can use the maps and data to better respond to crises affecting the areas.

We'd like to invite you to the launch event at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where there will be introductions to the project, a panel discussion on the issues surrounding open data and crowd-sourced, community mapping in insecure and unstable countries and a mapping party where we will be base mapping for one of MSF's priority areas (exact location TBC).

The Missing Maps founding members (American Red Cross, British Red Cross, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF UK)) are looking for collaboration with other NGOs, educational establishments and civil society groups. We are also seeking good coverage for the project as we need to leverage the biggest instance of digital humanitarian volunteerism ever to pull this off. Lastly, we are looking for funders - the project is right at the crossroads of humanitarianism and tech and will need significant investment.

On the night, you will have access to representatives from all the founding members, who can answer any questions you may have and discuss future collaborations. A surprisingly large proportion of the world is unmapped and we need to grow this project to be able to map it.

More details will follow (we will email you nearer the time), but sign up for a ticket and put the date in your diary.

We look forward to seeing you there!
