The River is Everywhere.....
exploring the potential of water running throughout the designed landscape
Landscape Institute East of England Spring Seminar and AGM
Whether it is a landscape, architectural or engineering design, water is always a sensible feature to take into consideration in every form and value; as Hermann Hesse highlights in Siddhartha “the river is everywhere…”. Thus this year’s AGM is accompanied by a series of inspiring talks exploring the pivotal role that water has in its pure landscape form: rivers.
Often associated with a tragic flood event, water, running in rivers across the world, is first of all a sign of life and wellbeing. To remind and inform us of the great, positive power of this element, a top-class list of speakers will share their experience:
Eoghan Sheils, director at SheilsFlynn landscape architects: his international experience covers a vast spectrum of design, including landscape restoration schemes and requalification or implementation of waterfronts, the most recent being a Green Infrastructure Study for the Humber Estuary. http://www.sheilsflynn.com/
Robert Barker, co-founder of Baca Architects: a renowned architectural firm specialising in waterfront and water architecture, winner in 2013 of the Waterways Trust Awards. Robert recently led a major application on the Deal Ground homes development which may go on to be the first LifE (Long-term Initiatives for Flood-risk Environments) site. http://www.baca.uk.com/
Richard Haine, founding partner at Frog Environmental: a specialist aquatic environmental consultancy firm and expert in solving man made problems in lakes, rivers and canals. Richard is and has been a key advisor on many river restoration projects, including the regeneration of the Bow Back Rivers. http://frogenvironmental.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/frog-general-leaflet-pdf.pdf
Jenny Mant, PhD in sediment movement and vegetation impacts, heads up the technical team of RRC. The River Restoration Centre is the UK's 'expert information and advice' centre for all aspects of best-practice river restoration and catchment management. Their activities are set out around three core areas: Knowledge Exchange, Technical Advice and Assessment, and Training and Guidance.
The AGM will be held at 3.00pm - all members welcome. If you can't attend the voting forms can be found at http://www.landscapeinstitute.org/eastofengland/news/article.php?item=907
Following the seminar, Eoghan Sheils will guide a walk along the River Wensum. Don’t miss out a great opportunity to explore the historical value and the modern interpretation of the river landscape and function.
