The Social: Slip-Casting and Plaster Workshop
- Community & Culture
- Central Saint Martins , N1C 4AA London
Tim Simpson and Sarah van Gameren of Design duo Glithero share a design studio and workshop with designer Phil Cuttance in Finsbury Park, North London.
As a special collaboration for The Social workshop series, the three designers draw on their extensive knowledge of casting and mould-making to present a workshop in their studio space. Participants will be introduced to a fast-paced, fun and intuitive way of creating structures using mould-making and a lo-fi rotation-casting technique. Each participant will be given a selection of materials from which to make a mould and a limited time frame in which to complete the task. The moulds will then be cast and each person will have a structure to take away with them. The exercise will explore a new and free way of prototyping and model-making, encourage fast-thinking and highlight the importance of thinking through making.
Glithero are British designer Tim Simpson and Dutch designer Sarah van Gameren, who met and studied at the Royal College of Art. From their studio in London they create product, furniture, and time-based installations that give birth to unique and wonderful products. The work is presented in a broad spectrum of media, but follows a consistent conceptual path; to capture and present the beauty in the moment things are made. Their projects Running Mould, Bench Mould Series, The Long Drop and Poured Bar take traditional casting and moulding techniques and elevate them to become spectacles.
Phil Cuttance is a designer-maker whose work is driven by exploring materials and techniques in new and exciting ways. He is particularly well known for his Faceture Vases which take a 2-dimensional sheet and poetically transform it into a graphic, solid functional object using a rotation moulding process. He has a particular curiosity for the transformation of 2D surfaces into 3D forms.
Workshop followed by opportunity to chat over drinks and nibbles.
