About this event

Professor Steve Banwart, Director of the Global Food and Environment Institute, addresses how we work together with communities and agribusinesses globally to tackle the urgent challenges that connect climate change and food supply in North America, and around the world. He’ll explore how we can challenge assumptions and break new ground to develop climate-smart, socially-just solutions that will create a positive future for both people and planet.

Staff from the Faculty of Environment and the Advancement team will be there to welcome you and will also share the latest news from Leeds, including how you can get involved and stay connected with the community.

This will be a wonderful opportunity for members of our Toronto Leeds alumni community to come together, get to know each other and share are few memories of student days.

Steve Banwart is a lapsed dairy farmer from his youth in the US, on the Iowa shores of the Mississippi River. His academic field is the study of Earth’s “critical zone”; the thin planetary layer between bedrock below our feet to the top of the vegetation; the zone of human habitation. He studied civil and environmental engineering at the University of Iowa and received his PhD in Environmental Natural Sciences from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich. He holds the leadership chair in integrating soil / agriculture / water research at University of Leeds and is the Dean for Global Development. He holds a “Yorkshire visa by marriage” and remains an irrationally passionate fan of the Minnesota Twins baseball team.
