Training on trans awareness and anti-LGBT hate crime

This is a special event organised by the Critical Education Group at King's

This thought-provoking, interactive and discursive training session will discuss sexuality, biological sex and gender identity. It will introduce trans* identities, including terminology, processes of transitioning, the law and guidance as well as hearing first hand experiences of trans* people. Participants will be asked to think actively around the problematics of gender construction and the gendered socialisation that we all experience. We will also discuss homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying/ hate crimes, how we can all reduce the attitudes and behaviour that leads to this kind of hate crime, and what we can do to help. The session will also acknowledge and explore the reality of intersectional lives - LGBT people exist within every community, identity group and background; and people from all those groups exist within LGBT communities.

Trans* is an umbrella term that includes people who are, or identify as: transgender, transsexual, gender non-binary, gender fluid, gender queer, gender questioning, or those who feel that their sense of self does not sit easily with the sex they were assigned at birth.

The session is aimed at practising and trainee teachers, lecturers, youth workers, social workers, and anyone else working with children and/or young people. If you do not work with any of these groups you are still welcome to come along, but be aware that this will be the focus of the session.
