UCL Science and Technology Studies 20 Year Reunion Celebration – Friday, 18 October 2013
When UCL set up its Department of Science Technology Studies in its modern form in 1993, it was an experiment. No one had ever tried to put together such a multidisciplinary team – philosophers and historians of science alongside those interested in the policy issues and the politics surrounding science, technology and medicine, how it was perceived in public and how it should be communicated to wider audiences. Indeed, critics were horrified and expected UCL to fail.
They were wrong: the experiment worked and you are the living proof of that!
Twenty years on, the Department has grown so that it how hosts 16 members of academic staff alongside a score of postgraduate and post-doctoral researchers. We are in huge demand by undergraduate students, from within and outside the Department. And this year we are opening up two new masters degrees to enhance our successful BSc programmes.
STS has a well-earned reputation as being a friendly and caring department, in which staff and students worked well together to bring out the best in all of us. Although we are now larger than ever, we still maintain that ethos.
So to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of UCL STS you are warmly invited to join fellow alumni, tutors, staff and students who have played a role in the success of the Department. Partners and families are especially welcome.
