The cancer revolution: from stem cells to personalized medicine

Cancer is a complex and dreaded disease. With over 200 different types and significant geographical variation, it is no wonder that understanding cancer has been a tortuous and challenging process. Over the last decade a combination of technological advances, breakthroughs in basic research and new clinical observations have provided insights into the underlying molecular defects that contribute to cancer development.

This understanding has also led to a more comprehensive appreciation of the environmental and genetic factors that contribute towards cancer. Most importantly, these findings are revolutionizing the way that we detect and treat cancer and may even provide novel approaches to prevention.

This lecture will highlight the latest developments in cancer research and how these are impacting on the management of this disease. It will also demonstrate how cancer research relies on a broad range of disciplines and how discoveries in one area of biomedicine (e.g. stem cells) can impact on our understanding and treatment of cancer.

In addition, the Branch has developed a partnership with local University of the Third Age groups and, annually, arranges at least one of its meetings as a collaborative event at their regular venue.

The Branch Secretary will be pleased to give any further information and discuss involvement by anyone interested in sharing in the activities of the Branch or in assisting on the Branch Committee.
