This weekend masterclass is ideal for anybody who believes they have the ability to write a novel, but doesn't know quite where to start. Acclaimed author Shelley Weiner, who came to novel writing from a background in journalism, will demystify the process, offering sympathetic and practical advices on the tools and the pitfalls, and how to sustain the momentum from start to finish.

The course is a mix of formal teaching, discussion and exercises covering key aspects of writing your novel. On the second day you'll have the chance to discuss and hone on your own writing with experienced mentor and tutor Shelley and the class in a nurturing, small-group environment

You will leave the course inspired and energised, convinced that you have the right to write, and with practical tools to launch on the uncertain yet life-chasing path toward completing your own novel. 

Course description

This intimate masterclass provides a supportive and constructive environment for authors at various stages of the writing process to learn and experiment with new techniques. Through a combination of practical workshops, discussions and talks, attendees will establish working strategies to suit their individual needs and receive invaluable tailored feedback. Topics covered during this masterclass include:


- Inventing plausible characters

- Writing convincing dialogue

- Constructing a story, and narrative techniques

- Building a believable setting

- Finding your voice

- Building confidence and maintaining momentum

Tutor profile

Shelley Weiner is an acclaimed novelist, short-story writer and journalist who has, over the years, established a reputation as an inspirational creative writing tutor and nurturer of new talent. Born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Shelley began writing  for the local Evening Post, where she was angling correspondent and the ‘bird’ who flew a Piper Cherokee plane.  Shelley’s novels include the critically-acclaimed A Sisters’ Tale, The Last Honeymoon, The Joker and Arnost.
