Description

BE PART OF IT

Calling the start-up, fintech and retailer communities!

Let's get creative - what new retail experiences can you build to revive retail when pain-free secure mobile payments are a reality?

THE CHALLENGE

Mobile payments will revolutionise the retail industry, and so far we have only just scratched the surface of what possibilities it will open up. We challenge you to develop, test and innovate around user cases and scenarios where pain-free mobile payment can improve the customer or retailer experience whether that be on mobile, online, in store using bluetooth, beacons, QR codes, expandable range screens- the possibilities are endless.

The retail world is facing some tough challenges – the high-street downturn combined with the rise in demand for mobile shopping being one of the big ones. Research shows conversion from mobile shopping is less than 1%, indicating a clear problem.

How can you turn this into opportunities using the functionality afforded by pain-free mobile payments to help you offer an amazing customer experience and ultimately achieve more sales?

WHO'S BEHIND ZAPP?

We’re a start-up, with the funding and backing of VocaLink - the UK payments infrastructure operator. In 2013 VocaLink processed over 10 billion UK payments with a value of over £5 trillion – safe to say when it comes to payments we couldn’t have a better backer.

Zapp will be open to all financial institutions, merchants, acquirers and consumers from autumn 2014 and its lead partners are: HSBC, first direct, Nationwide, Metro Bank, Santander, WorldPay, Elavon, Sage Pay, Realex Payments and Optimal Payments. RULES AND FAQs

How long will the event last? The ZappHack will last 33 hours, and the venue will be open for the duration of the event. You are welcome to come and go as you please during that time. All food and drink will be provided.

Can I stay over? Yes - you're welcome to stay over. There will be bean bags but please bring your own sleeping bag.

What do I need to prepare? Your team should come with a product or service idea (can be in development or already live).

Who should participate? The ZappHack is an inclusive event aimed at retailers and product owners of any kind who would like to consider the application of Zapp in their environment. Teams can be comprised of up to 4 people, pre-formed or formed on the day. We welcome developers, coders, designers, founders from startups to retailers all with the passion to revive retail with innovative ideas and cutting edge technology.

What exactly is Zapp and how does it work?
Zapp is completely unique – it is not a digital wallet, it is not a stored value account, it is not a separate app, there is no need to share account details or register with a password. It works through your existing mobile banking app to make a payment transfer from a customer’s bank account to a retailer.

Zapp works by allowing a merchant with their payment technology partner to submit a message to the Zapp Service. We respond to this message with a token that must be submitted to a Zapp Enabled Bank App which uses it to retrieve details of the payment from the Zapp Service. The Bank or Building Society make the payment, notifies Zapp and we notify the originator of the payment.

What will I need to develop?
There are two possible levels of development at ZappHack:

1. Use existing Zapp infrastructure

We will provide a pre-built, fully functioning payment demo, using Zapp’s infrastructure – this can be applied or interfaced with your concept via a ‘Pay with Zapp’ button (be that POS, beacon, QR, m-comm or otherwise, that results in the token arriving in our pre-built bank app)

2. Go your own way – go wild.

You may prefer to bring your own idea about how transaction information could be transferred into the bank app or possibly reverse the flow by using the bank app to present the information to the merchant. In this scenario you would need to be prepared to mock-up how the concept could work (not necessarily to build it during the hackathon).

I don’t have a team of 4, can I still register? Absolutely, we encourage all individual attendees to find a team via the forum meetup.com or we will team people up at the event itself.

How and when will I submit my work? You must submit your working app/product to the portal by 4pm on Tuesday 8 July. This will be followed by a 5 minute presentation taking the group through your idea/ product. There will be no PowerPoints.

Judging criteria: Our judging panel will give a score (out of 5) on each of the following. Your top 4 out of 5 scores will then be added to give you a total.

- Level of disruption
- Retail time/cost saving
- Consumer time saving
- Ease of use
- Technical completeness

It’s revolutionary – opening up a whole realm of possibilities for start-ups and established retailers alike. A simple payment mechanism can allow innovation in either the e/m-commerce or in-store experience.

Zapp will pilot with selected retailers in the second half of 2014 ahead of a full market launch early 2015.
