Zepler Institute Photonics Day

Photonics Day is a regular annual event in the University calendar in which the very latest photonics research is reviewed through a number of oral and poster presentations. This year, the event on 19th September 2014 is being re-launched by the Zepler Institute as a celebration of the truly multidisciplinary nature of photonics research. Photonics Day 2014 will feature presentations from across the Zepler Institute’s constituent research groups, in ECS, the ORC and P&A, as well as our collaborators from across the University, including the Institute for Life Sciences and Chemistry.

We are also pleased to announce that the day will be opened by John Dudley (President of the European Physical Society) who will give an invited talk in his role as Champion of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015). John’s talk will draw on the key themes of the IYL 2015, including light as an imperative cross-cutting discipline of science in the 21st century. Whilst complementing the multidisciplinary ethos of Photonics Day, it is also hoped that this opening presentation will act as inspiration for organising further activities to take place during the IYL 2015 as part of this global initiative. Alongside invited speakers, Photonics Day will also include opportunities for students to showcase their work by giving short oral presentations, ‘flash talks’ and participating in a poster display, where there will be cash prizes on offer for the best entries. Post-docs will also be invited to present a poster. A call for abstracts will be circulated shortly with full information about how to submit an oral presentation or poster.

A full programme will be available shortly. The day will include morning and afternoon refreshments and a buffet lunch (please indicate any dietary requirements when you register your place).
