Description

Translating picture books means translating two languages: the visual and the written. And it is the power exerted by pictures on the words we translate which fascinates translators. This has led Sarah Ardizzone to explore how we translate pictures, with her own practice being informed by her collaborations with illustrators delivering workshops to children. Ardizzone's masterclass will give some background on her own journey through picture books; explore different strategies and approaches to translating picture books; consider the challenges of capturing in words the mood, tone and register of the visual world; and look at how the creativity, resourcefulness and inventiveness that translators must draw on in order to translate picture books might affect their wider translation practice.

Sarah Ardizzone has translated some fifteen picture books from the French. These range from Joann Sfar's daring and iconoclastic graphic novel version of St Exupéry's The Little Prince (named a New York Times Notable Book) to an urban graffiti scrawl re-imagining of Little Red Riding Hood. In this line of work, she has had to perform the translator's equivalent of pulling rabbits out of hats in order to render a Shakespeare-quoting goldfish with suicidal tendencies into English (April the Red Goldfish) and has found herself in the Line of Fire, tackling the illustrated diary of an unknown French WW1 soldier.

Places are limited to 8 per Masterclass, so booking is essential. Ticket price includes refreshments.

Please arrive at 6.30pm for a 6.45pm start. The class will finish at 9.30pm.
