Artists’ talk 2011: Thomson & Craighead

6.30pm-8.00pm

Tuesday 22 November 2011

Sallis Benney Theatre, University of Brighton, Brighton.

Photoworks and the University of Brighton's MA Photography are pleased to present a discussion exploring artists' practice and process, offering an insight into artistic production within a changing cultural landscape.

Established artist-duo Thomson & Craighead have exhibited widely from Tate Britain to The New Museum in New York. They are among the leading UK artists using communications systems and technology in their work, to examine how it alters the way we perceive and understand the world around us. They use live data to make online artworks, films, animation, site specific and gallery installations. The artworks are created in real time from online material such as remote-user security web cams, audio feeds and images that echo the art-historical tradition of the ready-made in the digital realm.

In this talk, Thomson & Craighead discuss their multifaceted practice, process and related wider issues surrounding the ever-evolving digital and cultural landscape.  Following the talk, there will be the screening of their documentary artwork, A Short film about War.

A Short film about War is a narrative documentary artwork made entirely from information found on the worldwide web. The film takes viewers around the world to a variety of war zones as seen through the collective eyes of the online photo sharing community Flickr, and as witnessed by a variety of existing military and civilian bloggers.

A Short film about War was developed with help from New Media Scotland and Alt-w. Script by Jon Thomson, Alison Craighead & Steve Rushton

Jon Thomson (b. 1969) and Alison Craighead (b. 1971) are artists living and working in London and Scotland. Having both studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee, Jon now lectures part time at The Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, while Alison is a senior researcher at University of Westminster and lectures in Fine Art at Goldsmiths University.

A Photoworks talk in partnership with the University of Brighton MA Photography.
