A BFI project in association with Archives for Creativity and supported by Arts Council London

·         Are you an artist thinking about working with moving image collections?

·         Does your organisation want to forge closer links with film and TV archives?

·         Are you interested in how our national archives work and how they are planning for public access?

This short programme of workshops has been arranged to meet the growing interest in collaborating with film, TV and sound collections, particularly those held by the BFI and the BBC.  Artist film makers such as John Akomfrah and Christian Marclay have pioneered successful reworking of historic film and TV material.  They, and other artists, have shown how a creative approach to our archives can open up thinking about ourselves and the cultural significance of our historic records.  The digitisation and public access plans for these collections will open up further opportunities for many more.

Sign up for one of the workshops to be held in early 2012.

Each workshop will include:

o   Understanding moving image and sound archives, and how they work.

o   Building relationships between archives and artists

o   Existing archive collections of arts and moving image

o   The artists’ needs:  from searching for content, through to digital production, and to opportunities for exhibition

o   Case studies by artists who have worked with BBC archives

o   Advice on managing rights clearance

o   Archive tours

Speakers will be drawn from the BBC, BFI, LUX, Smoking Dogs, People Like Us and Archives for Creativity.

Two workshops will be held at the BFI’s National Archives in Berkhamsted, and two will be held at the BBC’s archives in Perivale.  Each workshop is free, including lunch and an archive tour, and will follow the same programme.

Please sign up for no more than one workshop.  Places are limited, and you are advised to register soon.  (N.B. Please note that Workshop 1 and 3 – on the 18th January and 1st February – will be held at the BFI National Archives.  Workshops 2 and 4 – on the 25th January and 8th February – will be held at the BBC Archives in Perivale, London.  Detailed joining instructions will be emailed nearer the time.)
