A Whistle-stop tour of OPAL

OPAL stands for OPen Air Laboratory.

The Open Air Laboratories (OPAL) network is an exciting initiative that is open to anyone with an interest in nature.

They aim to create and inspire a new generation of nature-lovers by getting people to explore, study, enjoy and protect their local environment. In 2007 OPAL received a grant of £11.75million from the Big Lottery Fund.

OPAL has developed a wide range of local and national programmes to encourage people from all backgrounds to get back in touch with nature. The project also generates valuable scientific data concerning the state of our environment.

What we need now

The Project staff have developed a number of packs many of which are appropriate for Exmoor. This day will provide the opportunity for attendees to re/familiarise themselves with the resources. However, we also now need volunteers to learn how to run sessions with school and youth groups on Exmoor. Full training will be given on this day and CRB checks will also be undertaken. After that you will be able to assist staff delivering sessions and after completing a short assessment will be able to deliver them on your own if you are comfortable doing so.

This event is primarily for Education Volunteers or those interested in becoming education volunteers. There will be extra spaces as well.

If you are interested in becoming an education volunteer book on and contact Patrick Watts-mabbott on 07973727469 or pwatts-mabbott@exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk
