SYMBIOSIS & AUTONOMY

Trans-generational trauma: the unconscious connection between bonding and trauma

with Professor Franz Ruppert

Professor of Psychology, University of Applied Sciences, Munich.

Friday 2nd March, 2012, 7.15pm prompt start.

The Drama Studio, Institute of Education, 20 Bedford Way, London, WC1H 0AL.

Franz RuppertTraumatic experiences cause the psyche to split. That is the essence of trauma: the experiences of helplessness and terror are split off and rendered unconscious, thus remaining unresolved.

In this lecture Professor Ruppert will present his findings and theoretical developments over the past 15 years on the topic of trauma, its relationship to bonding and attachment, and how the unresolved effects of traumatic experiences are passed on from generation to generation, with sometimes devastating effect. Ruppert's theoretical developments show that 'symbiotic trauma', the potential trauma when a child attemts to bond with a parent who is carrying unresolved split-off trauma, has profound implications for the development of autonomy for the child, their ability to form relationships, and ultimately to bond with with their own children.

Professor Ruppert's work makes a radical and important contribution to our ongoing understanding of trauma, and most importantly on how to effectively work with trauma.

Professor Ruppert teaches his trauma and bonding theories in many countries, has authored four books in German, two of which have been translated into English with a third in production. In addition his books have been translated in Norwegian, Dutch, Russian, Czech, Italian, Turkish and Spanish.

Cost: £15, Pre-booking only.
