60 Minutes with Jerome Starkey and Najib
Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at 6:45 PM (BST)
London, United Kingdom
As a 15 year old, Najib was a juice seller in Lashkar Gah's bazaar, now at 18 he is the first person in his family to visit America, the only one who can speak English and it is just possible that he will fulfill his dreams of becoming a doctor.
In August 2009, Najib was wounded in a rocket attack that killed his brother in Helmand, while Times Afghan correspondent Jerome Starkey was nearby. Nether of them knew it, but that rocket was to entwine their lives. It would propel Najib - the son of an illiterate cobbler - towards unimaginable opportunities that would change his ife for ever. Najib is now a pupil at a British public school, and Jerome is his guardian. What happened in between is a heart warming story that they will share with us.
Free event - Booking required. Donations to the fund that supports Najib's education would be greatly appreciated.
