History

Now a modern business centre overlooking the Horsted Valley and 350ft above Rochester, Fort Horsted is one of only a select few of Scheduled Ancient Monuments. In 1880 it was built to defend Chatham Dockyard from land based invasion after the Royal Commission decreed that the building of five forts should provide defence to Chatham’s Eastern Flank from the growing power of imperial Germany and the territorial ambitions of France and Emperor Napoleon III. The Fort was constructed using a convict labour force from Borstal prison and was eventually completed by 1889.

Upon original construction the Fort would have been a garrison for up to 400 men and women, but during World Wars I and II it was home to a small garrison from the Royal Ordinance Corps and then the Royal Artillery. During this period the Fort was used to manufacture and store ammunition although the official secrets act still covers many of the activities carried out on the location in that time. Following the Wars the Fort was no longer of any military use and was sold in 1963 to a development company for £10,000.

After its sale, Fort Horsted changed through the hands of many owners and tenants finally falling into the hands of a German tyre company who dumped around 100,000 tyres onto the site, completely filling the moat and the tunnels. On July 7^th 1976 a raging fire broke out and continued to burn for weeks, as many as 50 fire fighters were on the scene at the peak of the inferno. Avondale Environmental Services Ltd bought Fort Horsted at auction in 1997 after the previous owners had allowed the site to fall into derelict disrepair. English Heritage worked with the current owners to restore the Fort and in April 2007 it was reopened as Fort Horsted Business Centre.

Reported Activity

Visitors have recorded the voice of a little girl. The sounds of approaching footsteps are heard along with mumbling and talking in the tunnels. A large, shaggy black dog and shadowy figures are seen in the tunnels. There are areas with such an oppressive atmosphere that visitors have been known to refuse to enter and other areas where they feel they are being escorted out. There are also reports of the feeling of being watched.

What to Expect on the Investigation

You will be split into groups for closer vigils. 

During the night you will be guided by our Experienced Investigators who have a wealth of experience in leading and conducting Paranormal Investigations.

We will have scientific equipment available to for you to use and aid you in your investigation.

The night will consist of 45 minutes – 1 hour vigils where you will make your way to an area of the building to investigate. There will then be a break for refreshments which are provided to you free of charge before heading out to investigate a different part of the building.
