Join two of the UK’s leading street photographer’s on this fast paced and intensive weekend course on making images in public places.
The course will focus on enhancing photographic technique, building confidence and banishing inhibitions when shooting in the busy public realm. Participants must have a working knowledge of their cameras.
Day one will commence at Guardian HQ with an intensive overview of the history of street photography including vibrant slide shows of defining examples of street photography from around the world. The session will be packed with how to’s, tips and tricks as tutors explore street photography etiquette and legal rights and guidelines. The session will also include hands-on indoor camera training where a number of techniques will be demonstrated.
The group will hit West London for the first of two guided outings to shoot life on the street. Images will be shared and the group will reconvene on day two for a three hour critique with intensive feedback from the tutors to ensure accelerated learning.
The second shoot will take place on the bustling streets of East London providing plenty of opportunity to capture eclectic images, apply the lessons learned and expand their experience and portfolio.

Sunday
10.00am – 1.00pm: Intensive review & critique

Tutor profiles
Stephen McLaren was a television director, cameraman and presenter making documentaries and travel shows for the BBC before digital cameras brought him back to photography. He became a professional photographer in 2005 and works mainly in London. His work has been shown in three London exhibitions, Onto the Streets at Photofusion, Making Spaces for the Corporation of London, and EastEnd Street: Then and Now at the Rich Mix Centre in Bethnal Green.
Stephen licenses his photography to several national newspapers and magazines. In addition, he has curated street photography exhibitions, which have travelled across Europe with the British Council and is the co-editor of Street Photography Now, published by Thames and Hudson in 2010. He has led several street photography courses in London and has conducted many gallery talks and panel discussions.
Matt Stuart started photographing on the streets in 1997. He has been involved in numerous exhibitions plus solo shows at the Tate Modern Members Room, KK Outlet, "Humour" at Kohler Arts Centre, Wisconsin USA and the "Onto the Streets" show at Photofusion. He currently has work in The Museum of London's "London Street Photography 1860-2010" exhibition.
Matt has lectured at Oxford University, the Museum of New York, Goldsmiths and LCC and set up and ran with Stephen McLaren the first Street Photography weekends for the The School of Life.
His work has been shown in many books, most currently Street Photography Now published 2010. Matt is currently working on his first book, due out in 2011.
