"Learning through experience: a fresh look at an old idea"

The ‘what’ and ‘how’ of work-based learning is a dynamic field of enquiry in education.  Socio-cultural models help us to conceptualise clinical settings as learning environments and raise questions about the degree to which they afford opportunities for learning – for students and faculty. This presentation will consider how such ideas can inform medical education including the development of novice teachers.

We are thrilled to have Library Collections as our locational theme this year and have been working in conjunction with UCL Library Services to develop a fascinating programme of talks, introductions and venues. We begin our 2012-13 Seminar Series in the Pilot Hub space of the Cruciform Library. This has recently been redesigned to test new group study and 'grand round' style tutorial areas, incorporating prototype furniture, so come along and view this exciting new space!

Before the main presentation, Dr Tabitha Tuckett from UCL Special Collections will give an introductory talk on some of the methods used to teach Victorian medical students, and highlight some fascinating material from the archives.
