On any day of the year a visit to the Covent Garden area of London is an exciting experience.  It has been a centre for entertainment in London since the 17th century when the area including the Piazza were developed. It became an important and fashionable meeting and entertainment venue. Poets, Philosophers, Artists, Opera singers, Actors, Inventors, Writers, Pugilists all have frequented the area.

This walk explores and reveals some of it’s seamier past. During this walk you will hear about:

  • The pub named after the man who bought a round that came to 300,000 pints of beer;
  • The site of the arrest of the handsome highwayman, famous for robbing beautiful women of their jewels after persuading them to step down from their coach and dance with him by moonlight;
  • The final resting place of one of London’s most famous and popular criminals an escapologist whose hanging was attended by a crowd of 200,000;
  • The theatre that spawned not one but three royal mistresses, two attempts at regicide and a handful of ghosts.
