Site of The Theatre, Shoreditch
Act 1, our first walk of our series of linked walks on Shakespeare in London is the ruff guide to Shakespeare's early life in edgy Elizabethan Shoreditch. Discover the sites of London's earliest purpose-built theatres where Will and friends earned their writing and acting spurs. Shakespeare's early career started in Shoreditch - a village, then outside the City walls, and a notorious entertainment district. The walk also visits the places that Shakespeare is said to have lived, and other locations associated with Shakespeare Contemporaries and Elizabethian Theatre, before ending at London Bridge - in sight of Southwark Cathedral and Bankside. This walk takes between an hour and a half and two hours to complete.
Note - on the 5th August the City of London experiences the Women's Marathon - so that the last part of the walk may well be diverted and need to finish before reaching London Bridge.
Meets at Shoreditch High Street (on the Overground). The Overground can occasionally be closed at weekends, so please check travel options at the Transport for London Journey Planner.
