Event Details

Awards at the Festival du Creusot and highly acclaimed after its screening at Cannes. Didier Nion, one of France's finest film technicians, has made a remarkably powerful movie about one boy's coming of age. At age 17, Jean-Benoît is teetering on the threshold of the adult world. He has just been accepted as an apprentice mechanic at a garage. It’s what he has always dreamed of, but he’s a rebellious teenager with a troubled past and he’ll have to muster all his self-discipline if he’s going to succed in leaving behind a childhood scarred by the disappearance of his father. For three years, Didier Nion patiently followed Jean-Benoît in his classes and private life, as the teenager’s relationship deepened with Héléna, a remarkably mature teenager who mothers and protects him. A complex dynamic develops between filmmaker and subject: Often sweet, often contentious, the relationship evolves over the course of the film as the filmmaker becomes a stabilizing and caring force in the young man’s life. Jean-Benoît, turns to Didier Nion for support, yet maintains an aggressive stance that helps him analyse his own role in the making of the film. About the Director Born in Normandy, he lives in Paris. He has worked as a director and cinematographer on feature-length fictions and television programs.
