The Anchor pub on Bankside

The Anchor, Bankside (c) Neil Sinclair, 2012

Follow an American Thameside trail downriver from the ancient Anchor pub on Bankside to the historic Mayflower inn at Rotherhithe.
This atmospheric stroll along the south bank of the Thames pulls together the threads of American heroes, villains and events as it weaves a path through ancient docks and wharves.

On the way, discover:

  • How an old lady called Gladys put Bill Clinton in danger at Tower Bridge.
  • Why a red Indian chief got stoned in Southwark Cathedral's churchyard.
  • The naval guns that supported the World War II D-day landings and the Korean War which are now aimed at an M1 motorway service station.
  • Where Kevin Kline suspended John Cleese by his legs from a riverside apartment in A Fish Called Wanda.

Starts outside the Anchor pub overlooking the Thames on the corner of Park Street and Bankside, Southwark (nearest station: London Bridge 5 mins walk), and ends at the Mayflower pub overlooking the Thames in Rotherhithe Street (nearest station: Rotherhithe - 1 min walk).

During the London Olympics please allow extra time for travel to the site, and check travel options at the Transport for London Journey Planner
