UCL DH Digital Excursion at the SLADE

‘Digital Matter’ Research Forum

Hello there,

we are pleased to invite you to the next UCL Digital Excursion which will take place at the UCL SLADE School of Fine Art on Tuesday 16 November 5.30-7.30 pm.

The Slade School of Fine Art [www.ucl.ac.uk/slade] is concerned with contemporary art and the practice, history and theories that inform it. It approaches the study and practice of art in an enquiring, investigative, experimental and research-minded way, consciously contributing to the lively discourses of contemporary art, nationally and internationally.

The Slade Centre for Electronic Media (SCEMFA) [www.scemfa.org] was established in 1995 and focuses on research into the use of digital and electronic media within fine art practice contributing to debate on a national and international level.

By signing up to this event you will have the chance to hear what lecturers and artists are currently working on as well as talking to them about how your own ideas can contribute to understand and explore the way artists are working with the material of the digital, or Digital Matter.

Susan Collins, SLADE Director, will introduce the session which will consist of a series of short presentations of artwork and projects by artists and researchers including:

• Simon Faithfull [www.simonfaithfull.org] whose work explores the extremities of the world and its relation to the everyday or mundane.
• Susan Collins [www.susan-collins.net] whose most recent works employ transmission, networking and time as primary materials.
• Jon Thomson [www.thomson-craighead.net] who makes artworks which look at how global communications systems like the worldwide web are changing the way we all understand the world around us.
• Martin John Callanan [www.greyisgood.eu] an artist whose work spans numerous mediums and engages both emerging and commonplace technology, will talk about, A Planetary Order, the work developed while artist-in-residence at the UCL Environment Institute.
• Tim Head [www.timhead.net] an artist whose work has explored the elusive material substance of the digital medium, focusing on certain intrinsic properties through computer programs that are written to generate events in real time on screens, projections and inkjet prints.
• Kai Syng Tan (Slade PhD student) and Dr Jamie O’Brien (research fellow in Digital Humanities) on their collaborative research in relation to mapping cities.
• Lilah Fowler [http://www.lilahfowler.com/] is a sculptor who uses CAD and rapid prototyping to develop complex and accurate objects using different materials including mirrored stainless steel.

After the presentations there will be time for discussion over a glass of wine.
