Henry's Avalanche Talk

Henry’s Avalanche Talk (HAT) is a team of off-piste and avalanche awareness professionals. We are committed to helping all skiers and boarders enjoy the freedom of the whole mountain. Our goal is to help everyone stay safe and have more fun off-piste.

HAT was founded by Henry Schniewind. Henry is an internationally renowned snow and avalanche expert. He studied avalanche forecasting in the United States and then moved to the French Alps, where he works as an off-piste ski guide and director of HAT.

Henry has given over 750 talks and courses in the last 20 years, including presenting at international snow science conferences. He has published many papers and articles, often in the British press.

Henry created HAT in response to the observation that many avalanche accidents could have been avoided. It is a fact that 9 out of 10 of avalanche victims trigger the avalanche themselves. Experts acknowledge that, with a little more knowledge and training, you can avoid situations where you might trigger a slide. But a lot of the professional literature and avalanche awareness training is impenetrable to the average off-piste skier.

So HAT has developed a range of easy to follow programmes to help skiers and boarders learn how to manage the risks involved. These include:

  • Live multimedia avalanche talks
  • Practical decision-making tools
  • Transceiver training
  • Online avalanche talks
  • Regular insight through blogs and webinars on www.henrysavalanchetalk.com
  • On-snow training

We deliver this in the UK, Val d'Isere and online.

HAT is known for helping regular skiers to have fun and stay safe off-piste. We leave our clients feeling confident to explore the whole mountain.
