Jennifer Malarkey / Helen Broughton

Encounter was established in summer 2012 and produces the work of directors Helen Broughton and Jennifer Malarkey. We work with writers, actors, dancers, artists and filmmakers. We also create professional work with individuals and groups who do not regularly make performance. This includes but is not limited to architects, academics, illustrators, community groups and members of the public.Jennifer Malarkey is a movement director and pedagog. She trained in devised theatre and movement at Dartington College of Arts (2000) Central School of Speech and Drama (2008) and spent time with Joint Forces Dance Company in Germany, training in mixed ability dance. She is a movement, dance and animal studies teacher at The Poor School, a visiting movement specialist and director at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts and has taught movement and dance at Identity Drama School, ALRA, Birmingham School of Acting, The Royal College of Music (Opera MA) and been a visiting lecturer in theatre at Middlesex University. Work as a movement director includes Central School of Speech and Drama, Italia Conti, Etectera Theatre, Chelsea Theatre, The Roundhouse, The Lion and Unicorn, BAC and Oval House Theatre. Jennifer's work in mixed ability dance has been supported by Arts Council England in the DanceAbility Project.Helen is a theatre director and dramaturg. She trained at Middlesex University, on the NT Studio Directors’ Programme, Young Vic Directors’ Programme and with Katie Mitchell. She is interested in new writing and founded NiLon; the Northern Irish London Theatre Network which supports emerging NI artists. Her work with emerging writers has included guest directing on the Kingston University MA in playwriting and working for The Bush. As a freelance facilitator Helen works across the UK leading classical acting, devising and script development workshops. She has led workshops in directing skills for Old Vic New Voices and Ensemble Performance skills for Middlesex University. Credits include: Pigeons (Theatre503), The Killing Moon (Theatre503), What We Lost (New Diorama), Memory of Summer (Jermyn St Theatre) Resident Assistant Director Theatre503 (2010-2011)
