UCL Environment Institute

The UCL Environment Institute is the focal point for environmental research and related activities in UCL. Our central mission is to foster the interdisciplinary research that is needed to tackle today’s complex environmental problems effectively.

Our work covers seven main areas:

  • Thematic Research Development: Our team works across seven thematic areas to develop research collaborations for exciting and innovative research projects and to disseminate research results.
  • Policy Impact: We undertake a range of activities and collaborations to ensure that UCL’s environmental research impacts on practices in policy, business and communities.
  • Grand Challenge for Sustainable Cities: we work closely with the Grand Challenge teams and frequently run joint projects.
  • Greening the Campus: We have many established links with the UCL’s Environmental Sustainability Steering Group and the Lead Green Champion Co-ordinators both of which are working towards the reduction of the environmental impact of UCL’s activities and premises.
  • Consulting: We undertake some consulting activities through the UCL Environment Institute and our spin-off company Carbon Auditors Ltd. The Thames Estuary Partnership, who we support, can also provide consultancy services.
  • Art Projects: We have an ongoing artist/writer in residence programme and fund commissions through TippingPoint http://www.tippingpoint.org.uk/. Artists through creative work and collaborations with scientists can play a vital role in exploring and pointing the way towards the cultural, societal and behavioural shifts needed in a world subject to a rapidly changing climate.

We are always keen to explore new initiatives and ideas for promoting and disseminating UCL’s environmental research. Please do contact us if you wish to discuss anything.
