06 - Hospital Garden Helpers Wanted - Caerleon - 10 volunteers

This 13 bed all male unit at St Cadocs Hospital works with individuals who have serious mental health problems and offending histories. Pillmawr ward is a rehabilitation unit focussed on providing rehabilitation programmes that include, education, volunteering, substance misuse work, exercise and healthy eating promotion.
There is a small garden at the side of the ward which could be enhanced. Once transformed this area could be used as a visiting area for families, a space to be quiet and reflective and a cottage style garden where herbs and other small plants can be grown.
Tasks required include:
Basic gardening, weeding and planting
Basic DIY, laying the base for a small greenhouse, assemble a shed,
Creating a short path
Build a sturdy seating area and picnic table
Treat some wooden planters and install some anti-weed membrane
The hospital can order some materials if given sufficient notice. Volunteers may have to contribute towards purchasing materials if they wish to undertake the larger tasks such as installing a greenhouse and shed, all this can be discussed and negotiated during a site visit.
