EXCLUSIVE ONE DAY SEMINAR

9:00 am Registartion & Coffee

In the workshop, we will:

Discuss the two available measures of velocity, being;

1. Average velocity of the entire rep range of movement.

2. Peak velocity, which is the highest velocity at any given small point in the reps range of movement.

We will determine which is a better velocity measure to monitor for different types of exercises, such as strength building exercises or power developing exercises.

Normative velocity data for different %1RM will be given for a number of key strength exercises like squats, deadlifts, bench press, bench pull, pull-ups and for key power exercises like jumps, jump squats, bench press throws, power cleans and pulls.

We will also look at research data outlining what differing sets x reps x EFFORT (how close to failure or what velocity loss within a set) combinations have on not only velocity loss but also on markers of muscle fatigue or damage. What is the time frame for recovery to normal muscle function in hours or days from different sets x reps x EFFORT/velocity loss combos.

In the first practical session, participants will see how velocity is measured using the PUSH device during jumps, jump squats, power cleans, pull-ups, bench press and squats (or other exercises).

Lunch which is provided

In the afternoon theory session, we will look at how we can put the information and data we learned in the morning session in to place to improve training, programming and coaching. Many applied examples from high to low level athletes will be detailed.

The afternoons practical session will build up the mornings session, with participants able to improve coaching and training decisions through a better understanding of velocity scores garnered from participants performing training sets.

Optional additional event from 3pm - 5pm.

Learning Through Exploration: An Introduction to Coventry University’s NEW Science and Health Building.

Venue: Science and Health Building, Coventry University, CV1 2DS

Hosted by Ann Green, Head of School, School of Life Sciences

Coventry University's multi-million pound investment in the new Science and Health Building is a reflection of our commitment to creating future leaders across the health, life sciences and sports science sector.

Join us as a guest of the School of Life Sciences and you will be among the first to experience the brand new, state of the art Science and Health Building, including our new facilities for Sport Therapy and Sport and Exercise Science. These include a new biomechanics area with a 40M long MONDO athletics track equipped with four force plates and a 12-camera, 3D motion capture system, to record and analyse the users' gait as they exercise.

During the event we'll show you around all of the new facilities in the Science and Health Building and demonstrate our approach to learning through exploration and simulation. We do hope you can join us on 11th September to find out more.
