Overview

On this course you will learn the main skills for walking and staying safe in the UK Mountains in Winter.

This one day winter skills course will be a small group, so it can be adapted on the day to fit the needs and wants of those attending.

It is suitable for anyone wearing crampons and using an ice axe for the first time.

It is also a great course for people that may have already walked in winter with friends, but are looking for reassurance from a qualified instructor or want a skills refresher.

  1. Movement on ice and snow: Crampon and Ice axe techniques, including Ice axe arrest
  2. Avalanche: Reading Avalance Hazard Reports and planning accordingly
  3. Navigation: Key differences in winter
  4. Dealing with Emergencies: Emergency equipment and procedures
  5. Adapting to conditions: Dynamic risk assessment in the winter environment
  6. Efficient journeying: Route choice - before and during your activity
  7. General Winter Kit: Advice on Clothing, Packing, Food and Drinks

Frequently asked questions

Where can you hire winter equipment in Aviemore?

We recommend Tiso, as they offer helmet hire. Helmets are required for the winter skills course. Other companies that offer winter kit hire in Aviemore are: Ellis Brigham and Nevisport. There are other kit hire companies in Fort William if you are travelling through there.

Why are helmets required?

A helmet is required when practicing Ice Axe arrest. This course is all about safety in winter and practicing skills in the real winter environment, including icy slopes. The slopes will never be very steep - we will be walking, not climbing - but it's best everyone has a helmet on as a precaution.

I live in the Highlands where I specialise in guiding in remote, hard-to-reach locations like Knoydart, and making adventures more sustainable.

I have been guiding in the outdoors since 2015. I began leading DofE groups as a volunteer and soon immersed myself in the outdoor world to become a professional guide, and complete some amazing adventures, both solo and as part of a team.

I hold the UK Mountain Leader Awards for guiding in Summer and Winter and a British Cycling Ride Leader Award.

My favourite personal adventure was cycling to and through the Alps in 2020, hiking and climbing on my days off the bike. Some would say my most notable achievement was cycling to the Alps a second time in 2022 to climb the Matterhorn and Dufourspitze (Monte Rosa). If you need help or advice on how to make your adventure more environmentally friendly, I'll be very happy to help you.
