Event description

Description

This is an exclusive exhibition celebrating the past, present and future of council homes in Hackney.

This year is the 100th anniversary of Hackney building council housing and to mark the major milestone, the Council has gathered social histories from residents who live in council homes, as well as first-hand accounts from employees responsible for building and maintaining some of our most iconic buildings and estates. Spaces are strictly limited so please sign up soon to ensure your place.

At the exhibition you will get a chance to learn about what kick-started the social housing revolution in the immediate aftermath of the first world war; understand the council house-building boom of the midcentury; as well as get to grips with the political and societal drivers behind its decline from the 1980s, and what Hackney Council is doing to meet the challenge. There will also be photo exhibitions; immersive experiences; performances from young people who are growing up Hackney, never-been-screened-before films about Hackney’s council estates and residents; music; free food and drink; and much more.
