About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

What does it mean to be an inclusive leader within the VCSE sector?

How can we develop anti-racist practices within our organisations that support equity, justice and liberation?

How can we create disability equity by changing attitudes and structures?

Join us for an engaging panel discussion, chaired by Mike Wild, Chief Executive of Macc, exploring the role we have as VCSE leaders in building inclusive cultures. Mike will be joined by Hilda Bertie from Caribbean and African Health Network and Rick Burgess from Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People to discuss racial and disability equity and intersectionality, with a specific focus on leadership and workforce development. Rick and Hilda will share practical steps that leaders can take, to create organisational cultures that support equity, diversity and inclusion.

Rick Burgess is the Outreach, Development, & Campaigns Lead at the Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People, a Disabled People's Organisation 100% staffed and run by disabled people. As co-founder of the WOW Campaign they brought the first ever main chamber debate to the House of Commons authored by disabled people, and cofounded Manchester Disabled People Against Cuts. He sits on the inaugural Amnesty International UK Disabled People Human Rights Committee, and the Lived Experience Advisory Board of the Centre for Society & Mental Health at King's College.

Hilda Bertie has worked across the country championing Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) for over 30 years. She has a proven track record of achieving transformational change (HR and OD), across a number of public and voluntary sector organisations. She has considerable experience working with executive leaders, board members and politicians, collaborating on organisational direction, vision, and values to support embedding EDI into business as usual. Currently she is working two days per week leading on the EDI and leadership agenda for the Greater Manchester, voluntary sector organisation Caribbean, African Health Network (CAHN).

This workshop is part of the Learning and Professional Development Open Workshop Series and is being delivered as part of 10GM's VCSE Workforce Development Project
