About this event

This 1-day training course is aimed at parents and professionals working with children with Down's syndrome and will include the following information:

  • What do we know about reading and children with Down's syndrome e.g. can children with Down's syndrome learn to read, what level of reading ability do children with Down's syndrome reach, what factors affect reading development in children with Down's syndrome?
  • What does the teaching of reading involve? e.g. what is important in the teaching of reading, what skills should be targeted and how should the teaching of these be structured and organised?
  • How can we best support reading development? Practical ideas and examples for teaching reading including examples of teaching activities, suggestions for resources, guidance on tailoring teaching to individual levels of ability and strengths/weaknesses
  • How do we know the right level to pitch teaching and how can we support continued progress? Assessing reading skills, progress monitoring and continuing progress – how to assess the individual’s current level of ability to determine starting point, monitoring of progress and adjusting targets/demands to ensure continued success
  • Problem solving – common areas of difficulty and suggestions for dealing with these including motivation issues, difficulties with phonics and comprehension, etc.
