About this event

Background

For the second half of 2020, while many tech conference organisers are actively encouraging greater diversity in conference participation, they are also exploring new ways for technologists to deliver and receive virtual conference experiences.

Time is yet to tell whether delivering a presentation or webinar from the home office is more or less intimidating for speakers, but the second half of 2020 presents new opportunities for any speaker to reach wider audiences and through different mediums.

So it is timely to double-down on encouragement and support for women to make the most of this opportunity. To this end, Women In APIs is proud to support this initiative to help people stepping out into public speaking or writing.

Purpose

The overarching goal of the 4 Steps to Speaking initiative is to broaden the number of talented API professionals with experience, credibility and confidence to share more of their experiences and stories.

Success of the program will be tracked and measured by feedback and progress from participants, facilitators and coaches.

Objectives

The primary objective of the initiative is to help people in the API community to speak about, or author, API-related and/or technical content for sharing in the public domain.

Secondary objectives are to:

  • explore what is holding people back from finding topics and stories to tell
  • give women access to peers and a mentor with speaking interest and/or experience to provide feedback and support
  • meet and connect with like-minded members of the API community.

What's involved?

The program is run across four activities: 3 x 90 minute peer-to-peer group sessions with one facilitator and up to six participants plus 1 x 1 hour 1-on-1 session with a coach.

All sessions are delivered virtually. Duration is over six to eight weeks elapsed time, depending on people’s availability. Participants expect to put two to three hours additional work between sessions.

The 1-on-1 coaching session is typically held after the second or third group session depending on the need and timing for the participant.

Who expects to get the most from this initiative?

Primarily, the initiative will benefit people working in or around APIs such as:

  • work in API design, engineering, implementation and/or deployment
  • manage or work in API product teams or API-related projects
  • promote, market or advocate for APIs
  • implement and/or support API tooling and API management solutions
  • lead or facilitate API-enabled change

Broad assumptions for participants are that they:

  • have the potential of a ‘story to tell’ about their activities and experiences, but may not yet have found it
  • are looking for a ‘safe space’ to explore and discuss issues for women in tech as they relate to speaking and/or writing in the public domain
  • have minimal access to similar professional development opportunities in their normal line of work

Who else is involved?

Facilitators and coaches are experienced IT professionals with experience in speaking and/or writing, who are open and enthusiastic about sharing what they’ve learnt along the way and who are active in the Women In APIs community.

Facilitators expect to contribute up to 6 hours’ effort per program and coaches 1 to 2 hours per participant.

Currently, participants, facilitators and coaches are involved in a volunteer capacity.
